The Origins of Blackjack

The origins of Black Jack are on the whole unknown, although some say it was popularized in French casinos in the late 18th century. The at-home version of Black Jack and the version typically played at casinos are a bit different, with the later version being far more complicated. We will go over the at-home version here.

The Rules of Blackjack

Blackjack is typically played between two people, a dealer and a player. The dealer deals one card facing down and once card facing up each to themselves and the player. The player then places a bet, which the dealer must match.

The goal of the game is to get as close to to 21 points in your hand as possible. Each number card is worth the number on the card, and each face card (Jack, Queen and King) are all worth 10. Aces are worth either 11 points or 1 point. A "blackjack" is getting an ace and face card dealt to you. Since this adds up to 21 points, it is unbeatable.

The player has two options after being dealt their cards. They can either 1) Ask for a Hit, which is another card that they will add to their total, or 2) Stand, in which they don't get any more cards and the dealer then decides wheat her get a hit or stand. Both players can ask for multiple hits. If either's total gets above 21, they "go bust", which means they immediately lose.

The players alternate who deals.
